Timber Grades and sustainable flooring
With regards to wooden flooring there are various grades to choose from ensuring that you meet your desired look and that the graded flooring material matches its environment.
Prime oak wood grades consist of boards without any cracks, shakes or knots. Whilst Select grades, have occasional knots which may be filled or fillable. You would normally find there to be knots, splits and occasional sound hard sap within Standard grades of oak wooden flooring. The presents of sap and splits increases along with the diameter of knot size for wood grades of a Character or Rustic nature. Generally, there will be more colour and grain variation allowed in a Rustic and Extra Rustic Oak grades of wood.
The two types of knots that occur in wood are known as live or dead. The latter results when the core has fallen or been removed and is therefore filled. Whilst the former does not generally contain filler and still has the core.
